Onome Ebi is a female professional footballer who plays as a left-back for Nigerian club Abia Angels and the Nigeria women's national team, the Super Falcons.

Onome Ebi biography and family

Ebi was born on 8 May 1983 in Lagos, Lagos State, Nigeria to an Urhobo family, hence her name Onome (Which means ‘My Own').

In 2019, the Nigerian defender became the first African footballer to participate in five FIFA World Cup tournaments, having previously featured in 2003, 2007, 2011, and 2015 for the Super Falcons. She also played at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The Super Falcons captain also featured in six African Women Championships (2009, 2008, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2017).

The 40-year-old Nigeria international is set to be the oldest and only one of few female footballers with the most appearances in the FIFA World Cup tournaments (six) as the 2023 FIFA Women World Cup begins on 20 July 2023 in New Zealand and Australia.

Onome Ebi club career

Ebi started her club career at Omidiran Babes in 2001 before moving to Bayelsa Queens in the Nigerian Women's Championship in 2008.

The experienced centre-back moved to Sweden in 2009 to play for Piteå IF and Djurgardens IF in Sweden's Damallsvenskan.

She then played for Turkish sides Düvenciler Lisesispor and Ataşehir Belediyespor in the First League between (2010-2013).

She made her Champions League debut in August 2012 while playing for Ataşehir Belediyespor.

Ebi would then return to the Swedish Damallsvenskan in 2013 to play for Sunnanå SK before going to Belarus to play for FC Minsk in the Belarusian Premier League.

While there, she was a member of the team that won the Belarusian Premier League, the Belarusian Women's Cup and the Belarusian Women's Super Cup twice.

She signed for Henan Jianye in 2017, spending three seasons there. And in 2021, she signed for FC Minsk where she scored four goals in 19 appearances.

But after just one season, the left-back left for Levante Las Planas (2022), before moving to home side Abia Angels where she currently plays in 2023.

Onome Ebi international career

Ebi is a member of the Nigerian national team. On 6 July 2019, she became the first African footballer to play in five FIFA World Cup tournaments, participating in the 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015, 2019 editions of the FIFA Women's World Cup and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Ebi was also a member of the Nigerian squad in the 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018 editions of the African Women's Championship, winning the tournament four times 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018.

On 16 June 2023, she was included in the 23-women squad for the FIFA Women's World Cup, 2023.
