Bruno Onyemaechi Biography

Sopuruchukwu Bruno Onyemaechi, professionally known as Bruno Onyemaechi, was born on 3 April 1999 in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria to parents of humble means. Not much else is known about his family or siblings, but information from his social media suggests that he is not an only child.

He grew up playing football like many Nigerian children did and because of his age, was less scrutinised. This was due to the work done by the veterans of the game to help the sport gain acceptance among the older generation at the time. However, his parents did all they could to make sure that he took his early education seriously.

Like many who also hoped to make it in football, he juggled playing for local clubs and his studies. This he did until he was scouted by top Nigerian football scout and agent Atta Aneke.

Aneke is a super agent and scout who has helped the likes of Akor Adams, Victor Boniface, Gift Orban, Chidera Ejuke and even the veteran Odion Ighalo make their way into European football and gain prominence in the Super Eagles. Through Aneke’s influence, Onyemaechi travelled to Norway for trials, which was the start of his professional football journey.

Bruno Onyemaechi club career

Norway football trials

Bruno Onyemaechi was a teenager when he travelled to Norway for trials under Atta Aneke’s wing. The defender had trials with two of the country’s biggest clubs Stabæk Fotball, where Orban was discovered, and Lillestrøm, where Adams ran riot until he moved to French Ligue 1 club Montpellier in the summer of 2023.

Onyemaechi was good enough to be housed and taken care of by both clubs, even going as far as playing games for them. For Lillestrøm, the left-back was said to have competed in a number of friendlies and youth games for them and was close to signing a professional contract.

Unfortunately, nothing came out of both trials, but Aneke continued to advocate for him.

Journey to Portugal

Bruno Onyemaechi would get trials at Feirense, a second-tier Portuguese club, through Aneke in 2018 and secure a youth contract after his first trial. He rose in the ranks with the Feirense youth team between 2018 and 2020 before getting promoted. However, he was sent on loan to Vila Real in the fourth tier of Portugal’s football league system for the 2020/21 season in order to prep him for Feirense’s first team.

Despite his youth, Onyemaechi would end up playing 16 games in the league for Vila Real, scoring one goal in the process. The club could not afford to keep him, so he retired at the end of the 2020/21 season.

Feirense would end up giving Bruno Onyemaechi a run in the team for the 2021/22 season. It would turn out to be a good move as the player earned 29 appearances on the back of brilliant performances despite being a rookie. He also scored two goals for the team that season as they finished fourth on the log, their best finish in years. Due to their status as a struggling second-division club, however, they had to let go of some players, Onyemaechi included, ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Boavista

After a few pre-season games with Feirense’s first team, first-tier club Boavista approached Feirense for the loan of Bruno Onyemaechi. It was a season-long loan for the 2022/23 season with an option to buy for €500,000.

The player would hit the ground running and become their first-choice left-back after five games. He helped them finish in ninth place at the end of the 2022/23 season. That was their best finish in years as well, because the club are known to hover around mid-table.

The season had not ended when they exercised their option to buy, giving the player more responsibility in the club.

Bruno Onyemaechi international career

Bruno Omyemaechi was born and bred in Nigeria but never represented the country at any level in football. However, his impressive displays at Boavista caught the eye of Peseiro, who invited him for the friendly against Portugal in November 2022.

Onyemaechi would receive three more callups after that but fail to make his debut until the last AFCON 2023 qualifiers game against Sao Tome and Principe. He started the game as Nigeria ran out 6-0 winners on the day.
